!The Spencer Hotel, circa 1907, is an historic landmark in Chautauqua Institution, a cultural learning center for arts, literature and world awareness. In 1997 current owner, Helen Edgington, purchased the inn and completely renovated the infrastructure and remodeled the entire interior, converting it to a year-round literary-themed boutique inn, offering a distinctive and imaginative experience. Each of the 25 guest rooms pays homage to a renowned author (from John Keats to Beatrix Potter, Jane Austin to Isabelle Allende). The décor, with hand painted murals on ceilings, walls and floors, depicts scenes from these famous authors’ works. The common areas include a living room with fireplace, dining room, sauna, reading room and wonderful porches overlooking the Amphitheater. From these expansive porches guests can enjoy performances from the comfort of their own space.
